Pilot Trainee Program

In Spring 2021, IATSE Local 849 members voted to introduce a "Schedule D" to our standard agreement that outlined a new Trainee Program.

An IATSE Local 849 Trainee is an entry-level position for prospective technicians interested in careers represented by the Union. The Program provides an opportunity for guided learning and on-the-job training with experienced Local 849 mentors. A trainee is placed for a specified period of time (typically 4-6 weeks with the possibility of extensions), in a specified department and is paid at a reduced trainee rate (ranging from $18-$19 per hour depending on the size of production).

This program is new and still evolving - opportunities to place potential trainees are developing and highly seasonal, so please be patient if applying for a trainee position.

Training Reimbursement for Members

IATSE Local 849's current Training Reimbursement policy reads:

All Members, upon submitting a receipt and a certificate of completion, are entitled to receive 100% reimbursement for approved training/certification up to a maximum of $500 per year.

Should a Member wish to take a course that does not appear on the list of pre-approved courses, or exceeds their $500 annual allotment, they may appeal to the Executive Board in advance of the training. All such requests will be considered on a case by case basis. The Executive Board may require supporting documentation to approve such a request.

Receiving reimbursement from more than one source is permitted, so long as the total amount reimbursed does not equal more than 100% of the cost of the training.

Requests for additional training funds must be pre-approved by the Executive Board prior to the training taking place. Please use the form below to request additional training funds.

Receipts for training should be submitted within 6 months of completion and in most cases will not be accepted outside of the calendar year the course was taken. Reimbursements will be either mailed in the form of a cheque (take 3-6 weeks to process) or sent directly to you via Interac-E-Transfer. Please complete the form below to request reimbursement.
