Membership Resources

Dues

Union dues are a regular payment of money made by members of unions. Dues are the cost of membership; they are used to fund the administration and activities of IATSE Local 849, IATSE District 11, and IATSE International, and more!

Members pay two types of dues; Quarterly dues & Working dues

Non-Members who are permitted to work under an IATSE 849 contract pay working dues as well as permit fees.

Quarterly dues and working dues are income tax-deductible.

Quarterly Dues

When you become a full member of IATSE Local 849, you will have to pay quarterly dues in addition to the working dues. Quarterly dues mostly pay the per-capita associated with your membership - including but not limited to IATSE International per capita, IATSE District 11 per capita and defense fund, Nova Scotia Federation of Labour, New Brunswick Federation of Labour, and the Halifax, Dartmouth, and District Labour Council, and the administration of the Local 849 office.

During the first month of each quarter, you must pay your dues - please find a dues schedule below. There is also an option to pre-pay your dues for 4 quarters and receive a 10% discount - bringing your annual dues down to $360.00. Pre-payment can be made at any time during the year to get the discount, as long as you are a member in good standing (not overdue on your dues).

Each year, before the end of February, you will receive a receipt for the full amount of dues you paid to Local 849 in the previous calendar year to be used when filing your income tax return.

To make a payment on your quarterly dues, please find our available payment methods here. For a full breakdown of your account, please contact the office.

Late Fines / Expulsion

If you do not make a payment before the deadline or the “Overdue By” date above, late fines will be applied to your account at the rate of $25 per month. Fines must be paid before funds can be applied to your outstanding dues.

If you maintain outstanding debt with IATSE Local 849 for a period of 6 months, you will be charged a $50 expulsion processing fee and mailed a pending expulsion notice giving you 30 days to pay your outstanding debt. If you do not pay your balance before the deadline established in the letter, you will be expelled from Local 849.

In some cases, members may consider taking an Honorable Withdrawal before they get behind on their dues payments, especially if they know they won’t be working for an extended period of time.

Extensions / Payment Plans

If you cannot make a quarterly dues payment on time, you can request an extension or a payment plan. The Treasurer, in consultation with the Executive Board, will review all requests and will approve on a case-by-case basis. Please email your request with your preferred payment schedule. Dues extensions beyond three quarters will not be approved and the minimum monthly payment is $40.

Working Dues

Working dues are remitted from your paycheck when you’re working under an IATSE 849 contract. The show deducts an amount equal to 2% of your total gross earnings each week. You can find this information in section 17.7 of our Standard  Agreement.

If you work on a show that uses a major payroll company (such as EP Canada or Cast and Crew) and you work as an “employee”, all working dues will be reflected on your T4 slip.

Those working through a Personal Services or “Loan Out” Corporation will need to calculate the total working dues paid from pay stubs.
